So what does Grade R, A, B, C, D Refurbished mean?
Grade A laptop
Refurbished R, A, B, C, D Grade mean? The condition of graded refurbished products is open for criticism by suppliers within the trade. You do have to be very careful when purchasing graded IT equipment and guarantee that you are aware of exactly what you are getting for your cash. Below are some videos, pictures, and descriptions of what each grade type will look like. I have uploaded pictures of Grade A, B, C, D, of computers, laptops, and tablets.
I have updated this post to include what a fully skinned grade R laptop will look like.
Refurbished A B C D will definitely have a price difference between each grade.
Many customers choose to buy refurbished for one of 2 reasons,
save money and be environmentally respectful. To help potential buyers understand precisely what they are buying, we updated our blog post to show more clarity on our grade system.
Many essential suppliers have a grading guide to what they class as different grades are usually provided right on their website. Make sure you ask if they are not transparent in this regard.
Here is a video you can watch to better explain what grade A will look like.
This video shows Grade A laptops with a skin
Here is another video of what a fully Grade A laptop refurbished Grade R will look like with a skin. Now a skinned laptop has stickers on it to make them look new. They don’t hurt the laptop but they are somewhat noticeable. Take a look a the video below of a fully skinned laptop. See if you can spot the stickers/skin.
Refurbished Grade A B C D is an industry-standard way to describe what to expect of a computer product in the secondary market. This builds confidence in the customer’s mind on what to expect.
Which refurbished grade is going to work for you?
Below is a chart with the results of my survey with customers and their expectations. on what Grade A B C D means to them when buying refurbished and used computers laptops and desktops.
This is entirely dependent on your personal preference. If you are quite picky about your used equipment, then I would stick with grade A. Is this going to be a gift, then Grade B will work. Want something cheap and don’t care about scratches and scuffs then Grade C will work for you. I need the parts out of the system then Grade D would be great for you.

Glad you have the shop on line now, Phil. It is well organized and looks good too. And I appreciate your explanation of your grading system as well, although I note it’s not complete yet. For example, the iPads only have Grade A listed above, yet you have some marked as Grade “D”. So far, you haven’t explained Grade “D” on any of the categories.
Chuck,
Thank you for pointing that out. I have updated the Filmar Grades here http://filmar.com/2017/01/15/refurbished/ let me know if you have any more questions comments or improvements. The webstore is built for customers just like you!
Does any grade indicate a new battery?
Refurbished means good battery but does not mean new battery. What good means to me, the battery should at least be able to hold a charge of 45 minutes or more. Refurbishers are able to test this a few ways before the laptops go out the door.
Hello, thanks for this report.
Is there a comparison chart somewhere that lists the businesses that refurbish tech products? This would rank them on workmanship, value, price, etc.
Haven’t found a place to read about such a study, but in this economy, purchasing previously-loved (yep, saw that somewhere) tablets, laptops, cell phones, desktops, etc., will soon become a necessity. Savvy tech types would benefit greatly from a review of refurb companies.
Kate, Thank you for reaching out. I think that is a great idea and will look into it.
All the grades seem to focus on the outward appearance but none talk about whether there are or were function issues. Are we to assume that all function issues have been corrected or were non-existent upon return from the customer.
Mr. Waite nice to see you here.
Used, refurbished, off lease, and or used IT products should have a grade associated with it. If it does not have one, then I would NOT buy it. The Grade should be only associated with the cosmetic condition, and the product should be fully functioning regardless of the grade, but this is my perspective.
I wouldn’t assume anything, and I would ask the seller these questions when buying anything with a grade. IT resellers/refurbishers try to accurately describe the condition of used and refurbished products, so you will know what to expect and that you will not be disappointed. Because IT Techs are humans with free will, rational thought, and independence of choice, occasionally I will find that their judgment of an overall grade or condition differs from seller to seller. Please let us know if have any more questions.
Thank you
I have also put a much more detailed description of our product grading on this Blog Post https://filmar.com/2019/03/10/grading-of-computers-desktops-laptops-ipad-monitors-and-pcs/
