ITAD Terminology Explained
ITAD Terminology Explained. Thank you for your interest in learning more about the life cycle of IT assets. In the past few years, my customers have asked me what kind of terminology is used in the end of an IT asset’s life cycle. In a digital economy we must be very careful about the final disposition of these assets, whether they are end of service or end of life. I’d like to take a few moments to help clarify this process for readers.
So what is the difference between end of life and end of service? End-of-service IT assets are no longer serviced, updated, or supported by the manufacturer. Corporations that buy end-of-service IT assets aren’t necessarily concerned with the product life cycle. Our company specializes in end-of-life IT assets, like computers, desktop monitors, laptops, projectors, and everything down to accessories like keyboards and mice. These assets are ultimately recycled or destroyed. Let me further define what end-of-life and end-of-service means:
- EOSL End-of-service life means that the company who sold you the original product is not going to service it anymore or provide any updates. There are third-party companies that are willing to support these devices, but they can be expensive.
- EOL End-of-life means the product is no longer of any use to the corporation, the infrastructure, the client or the production environment and needs to be removed or replaced. The availability of a replacement product is also no longer available for purchase. Usually these assets are repurposed or shredded down to their raw materials.
- EOST End of Service Term This means that the product is no longer available for purchase and even third-party vendors will no longer service the product. This is also referred to as End of Availability, End of Sale and End of Life.
- TSES Third-party Support Extending Service or Extending Support means the product warranty is extended in six-month or 1-2-year increments through third-party vendors. These products are typically popular server switches, networking gear, and sometimes open-source software. Servicing your current equipment can be expensive and forces the client or customer to upgrade their network environment.
Typically, our company will work on these types of products when the client’s infrastructure can no longer be built, or we build upon a network infrastructure that’s capable of supporting many types of environments.
