How to Tell If Your ThinkPad is Affected by Battery Recall
I wanted to share this in the community that recently Lenovo has extended its original recall notice on its ThinkPad batteries.
Lenovo has received complaints that some batteries have overheated and damaged surrounding property. The recall is on the lithium-ion batteries which were made and sold worldwide. The affected ThinkPad notebook computers were made and shipped between February 2000 and June 2012. This means you could get a free replacement battery in place of the recalled battery.
Here are the laptop model numbers affected: Edge 11, Edge 13, Edge 14, Edge 15, Edge 120, Edge 125, Edge 320, Edge 325, Edge 420, Edge 425, Edge 430, Edge 520, Edge 525, Edge 530; X200, X201, X200S, X201S, X220, X220T, X100E, X120E, X121E, X130E; T410, T420, T510, T520; W510, W520; L412, L420/421, L512, L520; T430 (China and Europe only); X131E (Australia only)
Your should advise your customers to remove the bad batteries and only to use them with the AC adapter and power cord. If you are an IT director, IT asset Manager, or an ITAD Vendor I would proactively search for them and get them replaced.
The Lenovo website has a set of FAQs for consumers to read more about.
Thanks for sharing this Phil. I recently got a free replacement battery for my ThinkPad W520. The process is quite simple especially if you use the automated tool Lenovo provides. The tool grabs your battery serial number and probably other information and automatically checks if the battery is eligible for a replacement (you just need to launch the tool from the laptop that want to get a replacement battery for).
I got my new battery in Toronto, Canada in 3 days. It’s cool that I get to keep the old battery as well!
Lenovo Thinkpad laptops are great! Their quality is excellent, and you can see they stand behind their products even outside their warranty period. Thank you for the comment.
